Grade 4
Welcome to the Mrs. Masi & Miss Stravato Newsletter! 🌟April RecapIn math, we wrapped up our unit about fractions! 🎉 Students learned how to add and subtract fractions with both like and unlike denominators. They also discovered how to find equivalent fractions using multiplication. They also compared fractions and mixed numbers. To visualize their learning, students created tape diagrams and number lines. We kicked off our opinion writing unit by diving into the genre, reading some fantastic mentor texts, and examining text structure. 📝 In science, our young scientists explored sedimentary rocks through a hands-on experiment! They used gravel, sand, and plaster water to create their very own sedimentary rocks. How cool is that? 🪨 In social studies, students finalized their research for their state projects and created impressive Google Slides presentations. 📊 We also had an amazing field trip to the Rhode Island State House at the end of April! Students toured the building, explored various artifacts, and even participated in a mock trial. What an enriching experience! 🏛️ Lastly, we are proud to announce that our fourth grade students have completed ELA and Math RICAS testing for the year! They worked incredibly hard to review material, practice test-taking strategies, and produce thoughtful written responses. Great job, everyone! May/JuneLooking ahead, we are excited to start our decimal unit in math! Students will learn how to add and subtract decimals using place value strategies. They will also represent decimals and fractions on number lines and area models, and compare decimals using these strategies. Plus, they will complete a fun decimal project using real-world applications! 💰 In writing, students will continue to develop their opinion pieces, using reasons and details to support their opinions. Here are some prompts they will be answering:
In science, we will wrap up our geology unit. Students will learn how rock layers and fossils can reveal what the Earth was like in the past. They will also engage in a final project involving tectonic plates and earthquakes. 🌍 In social studies, students will continue working on their state projects. Additionally, they will collaborate to create a Rhode Island quilt showcasing various landmarks, bodies of water, parks, museums, historic sites, and more! 🗺️ Things to Remember
